Just checked with Brent Patty and 4 people are on a list(myself included) for a heater which does not need a 25 hour inspection.  Anyone got one I can buy?

Hi Brent

I'm looking to replace the heater on the 180hp AEIO-360 Lycoming in my factory GL (N3587L). Did you get any further with this - maybe we can come up with enough clients to get a new run made (group discount??)

Cheers

Chris,

We just had a run in july for at least five from Brent Patty.? Not sure of the status yet but will call tomorrow.? They should be ready this week.? Not sure how you were missed with an all call on the forum.? I will see if Brent had an extra one made.

Brent

O-oh, maybe my bad timing. I didn't see your call on the forum, but I'd be interested in the status. One thing though - do you know if it is the same heater assembly that fits the 180 hp IO-360 as the E2A (140 hp)?

Thanks

If the newer 180HP Great Lakes have a heater, Then it is possible to have one installed using the newer airplane's parts and data via a FAA form 337.
A shop that can do this is noted below as they have rebuilt a Great Lakes a couple of times..

Brent, Henry -  the new system from Waco may be the one mentioned earlier in this thread (at $2400), which I'm guessing would meet the FAA specs as original equipment. Not sure where the Brent Patty produced version fits in - perhaps he has PMA for this if he has access to the Type Certificate or something?

It sounds like Brent came up with a better (and hopefully more cost efficient) way to replace the heater/muffler assembly, so I'm waiting to hear whether I can still join that train or whether it has left the station without me!
Thanks
Chris H

Hi again Brent

Hadn't heard back from you this week so I called Brent Patty direct to check on the situation. Sounds like he doesn't have a 'spare' new system sitting around and so would need to initiate a new order (at a higher cost for smaller quantity). I'm going to check with a couple of other GL owners around here and see if they have any interest, but before progressing that can you confirm that none of the ones in 'your' batch of 5 needs a new home?
I would also like to hear how the installation of the systems provided by Brent P.  is being handled (i.e. what is required to get a Form 337 approval) and whether this removes the 25 hour repetitive inspection requirement of the AD.
Finally, based on your earlier enquires is the Waco factory a viable alternate source? Do you know whether a system sourced from them be a straight replacement (no 337 needed), and if so would it be effective for removing the repetitive inspections from the AD or would that remain?
Apologies for all the questions, but the inspection during last month's annual on 87L showed a need for some action and winter is coming on, even here in California. With a 10-week lead time through Brent I could be facing some cold, cold flying unless I get moving on this soon!
Thanks for your help,
Chris H

I was waiting for a reply from Brent but u got it before me.  I am pretty sure the five will be used but I only of the two we ordered from our airport.  I do not know the other three but Brent does.
Yes this heater does not need the 25 hour inspection---that is why I am buying it.
I think Waco will be a viable source but they are behind.  It is always good to call them and see what they can do.
Brent told me he has the paperwork for the 337 and other Great Lakes have this heat exchanger from previous orders.  Will keep u informed when the process starts.
If an item is bought from Waco I am not sure if a 337 is required.
Good luck on the annual--they r always fun!!
Sorry for the late reply but I am bouncing around Asia for 2 weeks with FedEx.

Great, thanks Brent.

There are 3 of us with Gt Lakes here at KLVK that want to go forward with this, so I'm just waiting for details and cost estimate from Brent P. to convince us this is the way to go before setting up an order with him. One thing we want to see before committing is an example of the Form 337 that has been successfully used with this fix - Brent said he'd get me something, but I haven't seen it yet. Do you happen to have a copy you can send me?
FYI, I followed up with the Waco guys regarding their ($2400) replacement - you may have gone through this already, but although their system does remove the need for the 25hr inspections the problem is that they will only supply complete systems (headers & exhaust pipes, fittings etc, for both sides) and can't provide just the left side, hence the high price. I would have thought that them selling 5 (or maybe now 8) 'left sides' would be more profitable then selling 0 complete systems but that's their decision.
Regards
Chris H
P.S. If anyone else sees this message and wants to join in for this next run, now would be the time to let me know - we're hoping to get an order in within the next week or so

Soon as I get the paperwork with the heater and work the process;? I will send you the completed paperwork and step you thru the process.? Someone has to go first!

Waco really has no plan for the Great Lakes program and only reacts to situations when owners call in with problems.

Brent

P.S.? Should get part at the end of September.

I might be interested in joining in for one of the heaters depending upon the final price. My aircraft is an early 74 with the O-320 but understand it is the same heater.
Please keep me in mind when the price is settled and I will make a quick decision.
Thank you,
Jim C

Great, thanks Brent.

There are 3 of us with Gt Lakes here at KLVK that want to go forward with this, so I'm just waiting for details and cost estimate from Brent P. to convince us this is the way to go before setting up an order with him. One thing we want to see before committing is an example of the Form 337 that has been successfully used with this fix - Brent said he'd get me something, but I haven't seen it yet. Do you happen to have a copy you can send me?
FYI, I followed up with the Waco guys regarding their ($2400) replacement - you may have gone through this already,?but although their system does remove the need for the 25hr inspections?the problem is that they will only supply complete systems (headers & exhaust pipes, fittings etc, for both sides) and can't provide just the left side, hence the high price. I would have thought that them selling 5 (or maybe now 8) 'left sides' would be more profitable then selling 0 complete systems but that's their decision.
Regards
Chris H
P.S. If anyone else sees this message and wants to join in for this next run, now would be the time to let me know - we're hoping to get an order in within the next week or so
?
